Internet rock’n'roll fanatics–please be advised: Dave Rude Band plans to release a new album in 2012, play shows in 2012 (being booked as I type–well, figuratively, I guess. It would actually be pretty hard to book a show at the exact moment I’m writing an update for the website. Unless I drank more coffee, maybe. Peets, anyone? ), and design & release new merch in 2012. We hope not to discover an unexpected accuracy of the Mayan calendar in 2012. Stay tuned…

I’m currently stuck (happily–I like airports) in Salt Lake City Int’l Airport at the Starbucks waiting for a flight to New Orleans for some gigs this weekend with my Sacramento friends. I love the music they play at Starbucks, about 90% of the time, which is a pretty good average. I’m going back and forth between my iPod with the Instant Karma: Amnesty International benefit record and the system in the store. Similar stuff on both. Snow Patrol’s version of “Isolation” is particularly good. Just switched to Paul McCartney right now. Gotta keep up with all the cool articles in Rolling Stone–I pretty much wanna listen to every artist in every story as I go, kind of a literary shuffle. Oh, damn–I bet that’ll be an iPad feature pretty soon (if it’s not already): reading an article on your iPad and automatically hearing music associated with its subject. That would be a hella cool feature that I’d definitely use. Wow, this is a fascinating blog, isn’t it?? See what hours and hours in an airport can do to you? Another random thought–I just saw U2 in Oakland on Tuesday. It was the best show I’ve ever seen. By anyone. Ever. Very nice to experience that this late in life, which sounds funny ‘cuz I’m not exactly that “late in life” just yet, but as far as concert experiences go, I feel you kind of max out sometime in the few years after high school. After that point you’ve seen so many shows that they kinda start to lose their effect, even though you still enjoy them. That’s why I think most people look back on shows they’ve seen in their youth as the best they’ve ever seen–their show enjoyment threshold has been reached and it’s very difficult to get that same rush from a great show anymore. Don’t get me wrong–I still love going to shows and I appreciate them a ton and I’m sure you do too. But it’s very rare that I get that feeling during a concert like I did when I was 19 and it was all still relatively new. Add in the fact that I’m lucky enough to play shows for a living and it’s doubly difficult to impress me–which U2 did on Tuesday in Oakland. In spades. If you can, go see ‘em. The production was amazing of course (you’ve no doubt read about it and seen the killer photos of the stage setup), but they coulda been playing in a fucking basement through one amp at the same time and it wouldn’t have made a difference to me. It was the magic of the songs and the band that was so transcendent. AND…Lenny Kravitz supported was unreal as well! His set was outta control. Soooo good. Started out with a 7 minute jam and did another 3 or 4 extended versions throughout his set which shows just how much fucking balls the guys got. To go out in front of a stadium full of people without a new album (yet anyway–it’s coming in the fall) and not feel like you have to play a greatest hits, all killer/no filler set to win over the audience–amazing. So classy and defiant. AND…it worked. Totally. The whole stadium went along for the ride with him and ate up every minute, extended saxophone solos and funk jams included. And by the way, that guy does have a shitload of hits too. I listen to him pretty regularly, but sometimes you forget how many smash hits he’s got. Sick. Anyways, that’s just where my head’s at checkin’ in from SLC…-DR

The show with Marco and I at Bender’s last Saturday night went well, junkie soundman severely on the nod aside. It was an event, to be sure. Thanks to everyone who came out for some different interpretations of the DRB canon (rocket? missile? love gun?). Playing the songs without drums is always an interesting challenge, but in my estimation, anyways, they work in that format pretty durned well. Even got a few requests after the show for an all acoustic record. While it would be fun, it might draw a little too many comparisons to certain members’ other musical endeavors… That’s right, Dynamite 8 had a lot of success with an all acoustic punk record a couple years back (punctuation winking smiley face). Anyways, the gig was lotsa fun and we’ll definitely do it again. For now, we’ve got some major show announcements with a major band for the midwest in the summer coming soon so stay tuned…And for chrissakes–SIGN OUR EMAIL LIST IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY AND GET SOME FREE SONGS!!! Back safe and sound from our short tour of the Midwest last week. 5 shows in 4 days. Hard working trio. Lots of fun. Lots of driving. Lots of short sentences. Thanks to all who came out to the gigs!! An especially huge thanks goes to our streetteam leader Brinton and her/our friend Nicole who came out and did merch and videotaped every show. And another special thanks to Rich and Tracy for driving out to all the gigs from Michigan (!). You all kick ass.

I posted a video of us being stupid in the van (on about 0 hours of sleep after a flight) and a brand new song live from the legendary Paramount Bar in Salina, KS (it’s like Madison Square Garden or the Hollywood Bowl but a lot smaller and in Kansas). Click Here to Watch said video, if you’re so inclined.

Tonight, Saturday, 5/28, Marco and I are gonna do a little acoustic set sans drums at Benders in SF. It’s for Reality Check TV’s anniversary party. $5, 21+. 9pm. Come out for some quiet Rudeness.

And those of you on the tour already saw our brand new Key design girl tank tops. We’ll have them for sale just in time for summer on our merch page here shortly.

I am very tired. Also, I don’t believe in magnets.

That’s it. We’re about to get on a plane in a few hours and head out to KC for our mini tour this weekend. Got some killer shows lined up: Thur in Salina, KS @ Paramount Bar w/our pals Barrel Bright; Fri in St. Joe, MO @ Hammerjacks w/Sidewise and Barrel Bright; and 2 shows in 1 day on Sat in KC–6:30pm @ Harley’s And Horses (FREE, yup, FREE, and ALL AGES too) and then a few hours later we headline at the Final Approach Bar and Grill by the airport (get it? “FINAL APPROACH” and it’s by the AIRPORT….whew…pretty clever, they are). Hella fun to be had by all this weekend. If you’re in a drivable radius of these gigs, come hang with our gang (watch out, Eminem! Dave Rude learned to rhyme!!!) and check out some R’N'F’N'R. Now it’s off to bed for a short nap before the airport van shows up at some ungodly hour. Fuck, Bin Laden’s dead–do we STILL have to show up to the airport 9 hours early and let them check under our toe nails?! Let us get some sleep for chrissakes!! See you soon, Midwest. Rain or shine…–DR

Yup, you’ve probably heard via our FB (and our voraciously promoting Streetteam) that we’re coming back to the Midwest this week!! The snow in Feb. couldn’t keep us away, so we’re comin’ back to sunshine (uhh…hopefully!). First gig is back at the Paramount Bar in Salina, KS with Barrel Bright supporting. They’re a killer band out of Wichita that we were lucky enough to share the stage with on our last run in Feb. Then it’s down to St. Joe, MO at Hammerjacks with Sidewise–a badass KC band. We wrap up this tour with a double-header in Kansas City on Sat, 5/21 where you can see us twice in one day (like those old Buddy Holly tours in the ’50′s): at Harley’s and Horses (http://harleysandhorses.net/public/) for an ALL AGES, FREE show!! Bands all day long and DRB plays at 6:30, right before Isaac James Band. Then we head straight over to the Final Approach Bar & Grill for another ALL AGES rockfest and play another set later in the evening!! Don’t miss these dates!!! See you out there, with BBQ sauce on our fingers!!!–DR

Don’t you love how playing with an iPad at the Apple store makes you really want to make use of all the shit on there that nobody actually uses? Like, “Yeah, I totally should do more Power Point presentations! I totally NEED an iPad!!” Anything to walk out of the store with one of those extra cool ass boxes under your arm. “Of course I’ll use the video editing software!! I’ve always wanted to get into film!!” For those beautiful 10 minutes in the store, you are absolutely resolute in your intention to make full use of every app on the fucking thing and 100% sure that you cannot POSSIBLY survive another DAY without one. “Exactly!! I NEED a world class text editing program so I can work on my manuscript while I’m waiting for the bus!! How could I get anything done WITHOUT a new iPad?!” Ah, it’s a wonderful feeling. I want to go to there. Course, if I actually bought an iPad, chances are I’d pretty much just use it to check my email and read Blabbermouth and the New York fucking Times. But it would all look so goddamned crisp!! Oh yeah, I still want one…

But I digress. You didn’t come to daverudeband.com to read about my iPad obsession. You came to read about Charlie Sheen!! Oh wait, no, you probably came to read about what’s new with our little band. Okay, well, apparently we’ve got tiger’s blood and we’re winners. Pretty much sums it up. Also I’m goin’ down to Fresno this week to record vocals on a few new songs (my favorite of which is a track called “Afterlife” that is pretty monstrous, but very melodic and pretty). Finally laid down a version of lots of your guys’ favorite song to request at shows, “Termite Mansion”, although it may be getting a serious vocal overhaul before it sees the light of day. The instrumental tracks are crushing, though. It’s an old one I wrote in a band years ago and we’ve played it forever, so we’ve never really been that excited to focus on it in the studio–we’d always prefer to concentrate on new songs and moving forward, not backward. But after years of people asking for it live and asking for recorded versions of it, we decided to acquiesce. It is a pretty rockin’ jam, after all. But we laid down instrumental tracks to 6 songs at our last recording session, so I won’t know which tunes I’m gonna sing this week till I get in the studio. I usually go by what feels good to sing at the moment so it’s really anybody’s guess. Hopefully you guys’ll dig it, though. How are we doing on the three new tracks released so far? You likin’ ‘em? Which one is your favorite? I go back and forth on which is the best one. Hit us up on FB and let us know what your opinion of the new songs is: The Key, Own The Night, and Yours To Hold.

Other than that I’m on the usual endless quest to book us more gigs and tours. Workin’ on going back to the same cities as the “Skin of Our Teeth Tour” in late May. I know I said late April a buncha times, but that turned out to be wishful thinking as I forgot the concept of other bands and clubs booking said other bands many months in advance. But we have a crack at getting dates for late May, so keep your eyes peeled. And we’ll probably do another local Bay Area gig in May or June as well. We shall see.

And although I do not have my celebrated iPad just yet, I will trudge through and use the video editing software on my Mac to make some hoopty cuts and pastes and hopefully end up with a mini-documentary on the last Midwest tour in February. Look for that to be posted soon.

And, as always, thank you all so much for your continued support of our rocking endeavours. –DR
